Debian/Ubuntu: Install and configure Microsatellites

The Cloud Observability Microsatellite is available in Debian package format for Ubuntu users. You can find that Debian package here.

Presently, Ubuntu packages are not distributed via an apt-get repository. The Cloud Observability Microsatellite is signed and will be verified automatically by dpkg.

Check out these instructions to convert the Debian package to RPM.

To install the package:

$ dpkg -i lightstep-collector_{version}_amd64.deb

The package places a configuration file in /etc/lightstep/collector.yaml. You can find a description of each of the configuration parameters here.

To start the server:

The Cloud Observability Microsatellite is configured to run at startup via an upstart config: /etc/init/lightstep-collector.conf

If needed, the Microsatellite can also be started manually:

Follow these instructions to further validate your installation and troubleshoot any issues.

You configure your instrumentation to communicate with your Microsatellites by providing their location. If you are using a single Microsatellite, you provide the DNS name or IP address of that Microsatellite. For more than one, use the name or address of the load balancer you’ve deployed. Find out how to do that in the language-specific Quickstart guides.

By default, client libraries use secure connections. If you’ve configured your Microsatellites to use plainport connections, you must configure your tracer appropriately.
